54th Annual Meeting Held March 19, 2008

The 54th Credit Union Annual Meeting was held on Wednesday, March 19th in the Stewart Auditorium at the Van Hoose Education Center, 3332 Newburg Road.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank each of you who attended the meeting for taking the time to make a difference at your credit union. We’d also like to thank Kenya Powell for singing a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem and JCPS’ Nutrition Services for the super job they did catering the event.

Chairman's Award

This award was created in 1978 to honor those volunteers, members and staff who demonstrate outstanding service and dedication to the credit union movement and its members. This year's recipient joined our ranks as a Teller in 1985. Throughout her career she has held various positions within the Credit Union. She now holds a senior management position and is instrumental in overseeing that many of our organizational goals are carried out. Over the years of her tenure, she has seen our Credit Union through tremendous growth and as a result, her departmental operations and responsibilities have likewise experienced additional growth.

This past year, our recipient accepted the challenge as a team leader to oversee one of our strategic objectives. Together with her team, they decided to develop an extensive outline for the Credit Union's involvement in the Greater Louisville, Inc. and JCPS Every 1 Reads program. She rallied for volunteers amoung the Credit Union's staff, solicited family resource coordinators at various schools to place our volunteers, and developed a weekly schedule to coordinate everyone's schedule. She has truly become a champion of the Every 1 Reads program.

This year’s 2008 Chairman’s Award was deservedly awarded to Susie Breitmeyer. Susie is a pleasure to work with and is highly respected by both her colleagues and members alike. Congratulations, Susie!

Good Buddy Award

The Good Buddy Award is presented annually to an individual who has gone "Above and Beyond" the call of duty for the benefit of the Credit Union. One of our strategic objectives this past year was to develop a Community Outreach Strategy in order to aggresively increase our awareness throughout this community. This year's recipient is a truly dedicated employee who puts in countless hours to get her own job done, not to mention all of the extra hours she has contributed to increase our Credit Union's involvement within the community, and especially within our field of membership.

She has volunteered to help out on numerous occasions with special programs we have participated in at the University of Louisville, as well as many other special projects throughout our educational community. She has been instrumental in getting us involved with the University's Financial Fiesta and Freshman Orientation, among many other projects at the University level. She was also instrumental in getting an Endowed Scholarship established at U of L for the School of Education.

Through her involvement on the Kentucky Youth Advocates Board, she solicited credit unions across the state to raise pledges to support a Financial Literacy Summit. She is actively involved in our Every 1 Reads program and helped us sponsor a Halloween Party at the Main Public Library and a Family Literacy Night Christmas Party at the Salvation Army Newburg Boys and Girls Club. Through her involvement with the Business and Professional Women of Louisville, Salvation Army, and Cardinal Dames, the Credit Union has been able to have a presence at many of these activities as well.

This is only a partial list of the many community programs and projects we have been able to contribute to due to this employees endeavors. We have participated in the WHAS Crusade for Children, American Heart Association Heart Walk, Habitat for Humanity, Red Cross Blood Drive, Children's Advocacy Day, and Project Women.

We would like to recognize Sally Gorman for all she has done to foster our community outreach initiative this past year. Congratulations, Sally!

Class Act Award

Congratulations to Becky Copley, recipient of the 2007 Class Act Award. The Class Act Award is a key component of our continuing commitment to provide the very best service to our members. Its name is actually an acronym of our stated Core Values: Commitment and Leadership to Achieve Superior Service with an Attitude of Compassion and Trust. Employees earn points whenever a member or co-worker “catches” them going the extra mile in assisting a member or fellow employee. Each quarter, the employee with the highest total of recognition points is awarded the quarterly trophy and a bonus. At our Annual Membership Meeting, Becky was awarded a trophy and bonus as the overall point leader for 2007.

Members are encouraged to support this important program by taking a moment to drop us a note whenever a staff member commits a “Class Act” on their behalf. Be on the alert for “Class Acts”, and if you spy one be sure to let us know by sending an email to members@classact.org.

Educational Scholarship Award Winners

Each year at our Annual Meeting, we randomly select three lucky names to receive a $500 scholarship to be used for college or other educational expenses. The awards consist of $500 Share Certificates invested at the Credit Union until redeemed to defray college expenses. Congratulations to this year’s winners!
  • 10 years & under – Janae M. Dukes Peoples
  • 11-17 years – April L. Heuke
  • 18-21 years – Kimberly Diane Roberts

Elections & Reorganization of the Board of Directors

Mary Ann Brumagen, Mike Goad, and Sandy Walker-Wooley were elected to serve another three-year term on the Board of Directors. Congratulations to these dedicated volunteers. Immediately following the Annual Membership Meeting, the Board of Directors held their Reorganization Meeting and the following officers were elected to serve: Cindy Potts, Chairman; Joe Vibbert, Chair Elect; Bob Rodosky, Past Chair; Sandy Walker-Wooley, Secretary/Treasurer; and Tom Mathews, Parliamentarian. Congratulations to all of our volunteers and thank you for your continued committment to serve Class Act Federal Credit Union.

Beware of CUSC Phishing Email!

Class Act FCU has learned of an email circulating to the general public requesting personal member information by visiting a specific website. BANK ATTACKS: Credit Unions Fight Back!

The banking trade associations in Washington, and their affiliates throughout the states, have undertaken a centrally organized attack on credit unions, calling on both the federal government and many state governments to raise taxes on credit unions. This bank program--called Operation Credit Union--is designed to gain commitments from all bankers to be actively involved in long term grassroots action in support of credit union taxation.

For years, credit unions have gained the respect of Congress as a grassroots powerhouse. We successfully--and by wide margins--fought back when the bankers sought to destroy credit unions by limiting who could join. Congress voted with the credit unions to pass The Credit Union Membership Access Act in 1998 over the objections of the bankers.

Now, similar to those initiatives, we must fight back again. The bankers are out to eliminate credit unions from the financial services industry and to add new taxes to 85 million Americans.

Banks want to take away your right to choose credit union membership, but one small dollar will make one big difference!

Did you know that bankers outspend credit unions 20 to 1? It’s no secret that the banking industry has deep pockets. They have over 140 federally registered political action committees (PACS) working for their political interests. In the past, powerful banks and their lawyers have combined to prevent millions of people from having the freedom to choose to join and own a credit union. Imagine being forced to use a bank where you are held captive to high fees, indifferent service, higher interest rates on loans and lower interest rates on savings. Not much of a choice!

This is where we need your help! CULAC is the nation’s largest PAC working exclusively for credit unions. Its goal is to elect pro-credit union candidates to Congress. As a credit union member, you can join the fight against banks by making your own contribution to CULAC. All we are asking for is a $1.00 investment, once a year, a quarter or a month to help fund CULAC. Your “Deduct-A-Buck” contribution will help ensure that the credit union side of the story is being heard in Washington,D.C. If you want to make a donation, please drop us an email. We will send you out the form and the amount you contribute can even be automatically debited from your account. It is only with the help of members like you that the basic right to choose membership in a credit union will be preserved for the American consumer.

Fraudulent Email Thieves Intend to Steal Your Personal Information

How the scam works...

Crooks unleash fraudulent email scams at a ferocious pace. The email pretends to come from businesses the potential victims patronize–for example, Internet service providers, online payment services, well-known national retailers, and banks. Thieves make up some story (often basing part of the story in fact) designed to trick victims into providing personal information. The email directs the recipient to click on a provided hyperlink to clear up the problem. The hyperlink leads to a server (usually in another country) on which a fraudulent imitation of a legitimate website appears. This scam is often referred to as "phishing" or "carding". The deceived individual is then prompted to enter confidential personal information collected to perpetrate identity theft. The victim is usually then redirected to a legitimate website to obscure the fact that he or she just gave away personal financial information to crooks. You may recall hearing of these scams purporting to come from U.S. Bank, Best Buy, Citibank, eBay, Earth Link, FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Company), the IRS, and PayPal — just to name a few (a group that tracks this type of scam and posts information is located at www.anti-phishing.org).

Do Not Provide Personal Information to Someone Who Calls or Emails You

Regardless of who they claim to be, treat people who call or email you seeking personal or financial information as potential thieves who may be trying to steal your identity. Do NOT provide people who call or email you with any personal information. The thieves change their disguised identity by adopting a new alias.

Protect Yourself

Follow the Federal Trade Commission's following guidance:

  1. If you get an email that warns you, with little or no notice, that an account of yours will be shut down unless you reconfirm your billing information, do not reply or click on the link in the email. Instead, contact the company cited in the email using a telephone number or website address you know to be genuine.
  2. Avoid emailing personal and financial information. Before submitting financial information through a website, look for the "lock" icon on the browser's status bar. It signals that your information is secure during transmission.
  3. Review credit card and bank account statements as soon as you receive them to determine whether there are any unauthorized charges. If your statement is late by more than a couple of days, call your credit card company or bank to confirm your billing address and account balances.
  4. Report suspicious activity to the FTC. Send the actual spam to uce@ftc.gov. If you believe you've been scammed, file your complaint at www.ftc.gov, and then visit the FTC's Identity Theft website (www.ftc.gov/idtheft) to learn how to minimize your risk of damage from identity theft.

If you think you have fallen victim to this scam, please call us at (502) 964-7575 or drop us an email so we can ensure your account is not compromised.

BBB Warns of Fraudulent Email Scams

The Better Business Bureau serving Louisville has received a recent wave of e-mails drawing attention to a scam targeting bank account holders.

The email claims to be from the FDIC and states, "In cooperation with the Department of Homeland Security, Federal, State and Local Governments your account has been denied insurance from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation due to suspected violations of the Patriot Act. As a result, Department of Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge has advised the FDIC to suspend all deposit insurance on your account until such time as we can verify your identity and your account information." The email directs a consumer to click on a provided link to verify personal identity; including account information or the deposit insurance will be suspended.

The FDIC has posted a warning on its Website stating the email was not distributed by the FDIC and is an attempt to obtain personal information fron consumers.

This scam tactic is known as "phishing." Such scam emails pretend to be from a business or agency the potential victim will know is legitimate, such as a credit union, bank or well-known merchant. The scam artist tells the recipient they need to validate a charge to their account or return a fraudulent charge to their account. The email then directs the consumer to a "look alike" website similar to the website of the legitimate business or agency from whom the email appeared to originate, all in an effort to get the victim to reveal personal account information. These scam artists illegally use company logos and legitimate looking website links in the emails to trick consumers.

To avoid being scammed, The Better Business Bureau offers these tips to consumers:

  • If you receive an email warning that an account will be closed unless you reconfirm your personal information, do not click on the reply or link in the email. Instead, contact the company directly by using a phone number or web address you know is legitimate.
  • Avoid emailing personal and financial information. Before submitting financial information, check to see if the browser is secure by looking for a lock box in the lower right hand corner or "https://" in the web address line.
  • Review credit card and credit union/bank account information regularly to determine if there are any unauthorized charges. If your statement is more than a couple of days late, contact the company immediately to confirm your billing address and account balances.

The FDIC and the FBI are currently investigating the fraudulent email. Consumers are asked to send emails containing this information to mailto:alert@fdic.gov

Class Act FCU members are insured by the NCUSIF. The National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund is administered by an independent agency of the federal government, the National Credit Union Administration, or NCUA. These are the initials you see in your credit union. The good news is that with the NCUSIF, your money couldn't be any safer if it were in Ft. Knox. Here's why:

  • The NCUSIF is the strongest of the funds. Recent, voluntary capitalization of the fund by all federal credit unions resulted in an insurance fund that equals 1.3% of all federal credit union shares. This is a higher ratio than that of the FDIC.
  • The Fund Grows Stronger Every Year Each year, federal credit unions adjust their contribution to the fund to reflect their total accounts. So, as your savings grow, the fund grows to protect them.
  • Federal Credit Unions are Exceptionally Strong. While no financial institution is invulnerable, it's comforting to know that failures of federal credit unions are at an all-time low. This means that an already strong insurance fund remains strong, since so few credit unions are drawing money out of it.

The NCUSIF is there to protect your funds, but it is up to you to protect your account from fraudulent activity. If you receive an email or phone call similar to the one above, take a minute to give us a call or email us to find out if it is legitimate. There will never be a reason we would contact our members to ask them to verify personal account information. That information is stored at the Credit Union, and we would never ask for that over the phone. If you have any questions or concerns, please give us a call at (502) 964-7575 or drop us an email.

    CU Here...and There!

Kentucky Credit Unions have joined with credit unions in the Midwest and across the country so you can access all of your accounts wherever you see this logo of the Credit Union swirl! So we will "CU Here....and There!"

    Connect to CU Service Center!

What is a Credit Union Center?

A Credit Union Center is simply a branch that's shared by several different credit unions. Members of any participating credit union can go to any Credit Union Center to conduct virtually all their credit union transactions. To the members, it's the same as visiting their own credit union branches.

Credit Union Centers are an efficient way for credit unions to offer you more locations and more convenience. For example, you could stop by a Credit Union Center while you're travelling, or if you move away, there might be a Credit Union Center nearby where you can conduct your transactions!

Where are the Credit Union Centers Located?

The Credit Union Centers are located at 4917B Dixie Highway, Kmart Plaza and 2925 Goose Creek Road. Class Act FCU members can go into those branches to conduct almost any transaction that they could normally do with a teller at our main office. Make withdrawals, transfers, deposits, and inquiries on your account. Nationwide, you have access to your account through the Credit Union Service Corporation (CUSC); the largest shared branch program across the country. Members of credit unions participacing in the shared branch program across the country have access to their accounts and services in more than 20 states. Indiana offers members 12 shared branch locations throughout the state; in Kentucky, we're working to build our network to offer the same convenience to you.

If you have any questions about the Credit Union Centers, you can reach their offices at 502.448.1686 (Dixie Highway) or 502.429.0068 (Goose Creek Road). For a listing of all credit unions affiliated with the CU Service Center network, click here!
